Australia’s aged population is growing with people living longer, healthier lives and this is creating considerable demand for lifestyle housing alternatives during retirement. RUBI Architects were charged with an ambitious brief to design the Belmont retirement village that would potentially become the new benchmark for quality designed retirement communities. The strong design of Belmont Retirement Village focus was placed on human bulk and massing, context, the relationship to the Barwon River nature reserve, overall scale, diversity in the residential offering, and strong community engagement breaking the stereotypical norm of dense, overwhelming developments. The Belmont Retirement Village achieves a modern identity while enhancing the heritage value of existing buildings on site.
